My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way reveals how he met Brian May

My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way has told NME how he first hooked up withQueen’s Brian May, who joined them onstage at Reading Festival last night.

Guitarist May played on Queen’s 'We Will Rock You' and MCR's 'Welcome To The Black Parade' at the headline show, withWay explaining that they first met after he emailed May out of the blue.

The singer explained:

I wrote an email to Brian after getting his email off [producer] Rob Cavallo. There was this story that you [Queen] played a show in Paris and got booed off andFreddie [Mercury] said, 'We’re gonna come back and be the biggest band in the world'. And after what happened to us at Reading in 2006 [when they were bottled], people would ask us, 'Are you gonna do that again? [play the festival]' and I’d go, 'Not unless we're headlining it.'

He added:

So I told him this whole story and how we were gonna go back and could he give me some advice. So we just got talking and I went to his house – I got off a plane, went to his house, went to his jam room, jammed out, did a soundcheck. I had a feeling that morning, it flipped in my brain, not, ‘Are we ready for this’, I almost felt like ‘Is the crowd ready for us?’

My Chemical Romance have received a largely positive response from festivalgoers who watched the performance. They played Leeds Festival tonight withoutMay.

My Chemical Romance At Reading 2011 - Review

My Chemical Romance headline Reading Festival 2011 - full gig report and setlist

Who: My Chemical Romance
Where: Reading, Main Stage, Friday
Vibe: Friday night. MCR. Reading feeling dry and up for it.

MCR Reading

continued...

High points: Well, set openers don't come much more high octane than 'Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)' followed by 'I'm Not OK (I Promise)' - complete with short, sharp power snare breakdown. Oh, and then 'Planetary (Go!)', accompanied by a battalion of balloons. Makes you wonder if they've got enough in the tank to sustain a full set. Seems they do, as they finish the set with an encore that features Brian May, the bulk of 'We Will Rock You', 'Welcome To The Black Parade', fireworks, and glitter canons. A hard act to follow that Muse will no doubt step to, but The Strokes? We shall see.
Low Points: Not really; MCR are close to the top of their game, a finely tuned machine that veer between frenetic and anthemic and frequently combine both, giving the MCRmy exactly what they want. And is it just us, or is the sound on the Main Stage up to par this year?

MCR headline Reading
Banter: "Reading - you look ravishing, you look beautiful. You look different. This is the first night of the tour. Think you can out dance me? I want to see you try." Gerard gave a shout out to most of the Main Stage from The Blackout to New Found Glory, Bring Me The Horizon, the motherfucking Offspring, and the motherfucking Deftones. He forgot about Dry The River, strangely.

New interview with Gerard Way

When we finished Danger Days we were sad in a weird way because we felt like we were just getting starte
”

Gerard Way My Chemical Romance singer

26th August 2011

ROCKERS My Chemical Romance have good reason to be chuffed at headlining the Reading and Leeds Festivals.

They want to wipe the memory of getting pelted with bottles of pee the last time they played.

The US stars were met with a hail of boos and bottles when they performed in 2006.

But they insist they will win over fans this weekend.

Speaking before their Reading slot tonight, singer Gerard Way, 34, told me: “We haven’t felt like we’ve had anything to prove in a long time, so maybe this is the right time to do that. We’re closing a festival where not everyone has approved of us in the past.”

He insisted “playing everyone’s favourite songs and putting on a show” will be enough of a way of closing the festival rather than trying to match the fireworks of fellow headliners Muse.

Gerard added: “We don’t grow up with these kind of festivals in the States so this amazing event that goes on for days where you discover amazing new bands all day and night long means a lot.”

Gerard said My Chem would not take as long between albums as they did in the four years between The Black Parade and Danger Days.

He promised: “We’ve got a lot of new songs already.

When we finished Danger Days we were sad in a weird way because we felt like we were just getting started.”

And he revealed the album they scrapped before Danger Days was finished may get a release.

He said: “Those songs might yet see the light of day.”

Sounds good to me, sir.

Ablsolute Punk Talks To Mikey

My Chemical Romance 08.12.11

Interviewed by: Alex DiVincenzo (08/25/11)
My Chemical Romance bassist Mikey Way took some time out on the Honda Civic Tour to talk about being on the road with Blink 182, the band's new material and more. Read my write-up on the tour here.

I caught the Honda Civic Tour in Boston the other night. Great job.

Oh, awesome. Thank you! It's been a lot of fun so far. I mean, we've only been out for a couple of days, but it seems to be one of our favorite tours. I don't want to jump the gun or anything, but it seems like it could be one of our favorite tours.

How has the reaction been so far?

It's been awesome! There's a great mix of people in the crowds, and everyone that's there wants to have fun. That's been the vibe in the crowd. People are really accepting of every band on the show. I've watch every band so far play, and the crowd is really receptive and awesome.

What's it like to share the stage with Blink 182?

It's really, really, really great. They're a band that we've respected and had a mutual adoration for for a long time. Actually, this is a tour we talked about doing a long time ago. It just never worked out, and then they went on a little bit of a break. When they were coming back, Tom [DeLonge] came out to one of our shows and asked us if we'd want to do a tour together. It was really exciting. We thought it would be something that people would be really excited about. We got together, we picked a bunch of bands that we both really like and we came up with production. We started about five days ago, and it's all going amazing.

How about Manchester Orchestra, who are opening for this leg of the tour?

They're amazing. They have an intense live energy. They're really good. It's something that people wouldn't usually expect on a tour like this, but it's working really well. They're turning a lot of heads on this tour.

I know you've only been out for about a week, but do you have any tour stories so far? It must be exciting being on the road with Blink.

Yeah, they're such great guys. We've known them for a long time. We toured Warped Tour in 2005 with The Transplants and we got to meet Travis [Barker]. Angels and Airwaves, we've done shows with them a ton and got to know Tom through the years. And Mark [Hoppus] I met through mutual friends. The vibe is just amazing. It's a bunch of friends on tour. Everybody goofs around and hangs out. It's like a giant, fun rock tour. It's really cool.

You designed a motorcycle for the tour. Could you tell us a bit about that?

Sure! Usually on the Civic Tour, the bands design a Civic. We wanted to do something a little different, because Blink did an awesome Civic and we didn't want to be like, "Oh, we've got to outdo their Civic." So we like, "Let's do a motorcycle. That could be cool." What's cool about it is the bike kind of fits the aesthetic of the album. It kind of reminded us of one of our favorite movies, Akira; the bikes that they ride in that. It turned out perfect. We mixed the visuals of our album with the bike, and it came out great.

Do you prefer a bigger tour like this or a headlining slot?

It's weird. As a band, we just really like to get in front of as many people as possible. I think those are situations where we really shine. At the beginning of the album cycle we did some underplays, and those usually make me more nervous. When you play a bigger place, it's easier to just forget people are watching you because they're farther away. It's easier to detach yourself from getting scared on stage. But I love tours like this. Everything gets really dialed in and regimented. Everything works like clockwork; everything is taken care of. It's a lot of fun.

So you still find yourself getting those pre-show jitters?

Oh, absolutely! Every night. It never goes away. I think that's a good thing; I don't think it's supposed to ever go away. You're not in the right profession if it goes away, I guess.

Danger Days just came out last year, but have you started working on any new material?

Yeah, we have actually. We kind of write every day and we don't even realize we're doing it. Sometimes we'll be at soundcheck and someone will have a riff and everyone starts playing off the riff, or Gerard [Way] has a vocal melody and everyone starts playing off the vocal melody. We've had tons of stuff come from that. We're not really sure where the songs are going to end up or what they're going to be yet, but we're just going to keep writing and writing. After this tour, we're going to pretty quickly continue demoing and then get in there as soon as possible to make a new album.

What's the new stuff sounding like?

The weird thing is, whenever we have a new batch of songs pop up during a record cycle or after a record cycle, it's usually some kind of kind of thing that gets us to the next sound. Any time we try to guess where we're going to be or where we're going to go, we're usually wrong but we're always very pleasantly surprised at where we ended up. It's hard for us to guess what it's going to end up sounding like. Right now, it's definitely a mix of Danger Daysand some of the stuff we did back in the day.

Sounds good to me. Speaking of back in the day, this year marks the band's 10th anniversary. Do you have anything special planned?

Yeah! We actually have a bunch of surprises. I'm not able to talk about many of them, but what I can talk about is that we're going to be playing some songs closer to the anniversary that we haven't played in a very long time. We've been going through and practicing some of the older stuff.

On a related note, how do you come up with your setlists?

For the past couple of tours, Frank [Iero] has been doing it. Here's really good at it. Like backstage before the show, he comes up with a pre-show psych up mix. He's just really good at making mix CDs and mix tapes, and it lends itself to the setlist. He's been really good at making the setlist like a journey. You don't know what's gonna come next. It's kind of like something old, something new and something you didn't expect us to play.

Do you plan to continue your foray into graphic novels?

Yeah. Actually, me and G are working on something for DC [Comics] right now. It would have been out quite a time ago, but we had some stuff come up that we had to take care of so it got pushed back. We're in the thick of it now. We're planning and plotting and coming up with designs and sketches. There should be some kind of announcement very soon.

What are you plans for after the tour wraps up? I know you mentioned demoing...

Yeah, we're going to continue demoing. I can foresee us recording sooner than later and putting something out. We're in a real prolific spot creatively, and we want to harness it. We want to come out with something soon and not leave a giant gap between albums.

Do you have any closing remarks?

Thank you to your website for supporting us through the years. If anyone wants to come check out the Civic Tour, we're five days in and it's incredible. It feels like it's going to be one of the best tours we've ever been on.

Tom Meighan Apologised To Way Over Insult

Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan spent an agonising 10 hours trying to avoid fellow rockers My Chemical Romance on a plane - after insultingthe band early in his career.

The British rocker had criticised Gerard Way's group, accusing theWelcome to the Black Parade hitmakers of penning "ventriloquists' music" - and then found himself on a 10-hour plane flight from the U.K. to San Francisco with the band earlier this year (11).

He admits he spent almost the entire journey avoiding eye contact before plucking up the courage to apologise to Way.

Meighan tells Q magazine, "I thought, 'F**k it, I've gotta go and apologise.' So I went over, he went, 'Hey man!' We gave each other a hug and then the whole band started laughing.

"I thought, 'F**k, why didn't I do this before we took off, (we) could've saved ourselves 10 hours of s**t!' Anyway, all that taking the p**s, we was (sic) only ever having a laugh. What else did you wantfrom young, foolish 23-year-olds?"

Spin Magazine's exclusive interview with Mikey and Tom DeLonge from Honda Civic Tour

Blink-182 recruited My Chemical Romance to join them on the Honda Civic Tour this summer and fall. Blink are playing songs from their September 27 release, Neighborhoods, their first studio album in eight years, and guitarist-vocalist Tom DeLonge tells SPIN that he's always wanted to go out on the road with the New Jersey rockers.

Hours before the recent opening show in Holmdel, NJ (read our review), DeLonge and MCR bassist Mikey Way sat down with SPIN to chat about the tour, the musical influence of favorite bands Weezer and Rancid, and previous tourmates Green Day's penchant for pranks.

Naturally, there were plenty of jokes. At one point during the interview, DeLonge dug into his pocket, pulled out a guitar pick and handed it to Way, who read aloud the inscription on the back: "I want you inside me."

I imagine you guys are laughing constantly. Do you pull pranks on each other?
Tom DeLonge: We don't really prank anybody. Well, we did [on a previous tour] with a bunch of concussion light blasts during Jimmy Eat World's set. We did it just randomly in the middle of a song. [Frontman] Jim [Adkins] would be singing about a girl and we'd just hit it. That was partly Green Day's idea, too.

Mikey Way: When we were out with Green Day they got us really good on the last night of the tour. They had a garbage bag filled with popcorn above me and they poured it out during our set. They also had flood lights and their lighting directors came out and pointed them directly in our faces. Every time [MCR frontman] Gerard [Way] tried to talk between songs they'd light off the concussion blasts -- and then the band came out onstage with light sabers and were fighting while we were playing [laughs].

Do you guys have any pre-show rituals?
TD: I told everyone I wasn't going to drink on this tour. But now I'm feeling like I might start here pretty shortly [laughs]. I don't know about you [looks at Mikey] but I've got a good hour of listening to Van Halen and the Descendents, and drinking vodka with a dash of orange juice.

MW: That's a good ritual. I just kind of sit backstage and do muscle memory exercises and get in the zone for about an hour before. It's not nearly as cool as your ritual.

TD: I know. Muscle memory, damn.

MW: I don't even have any muscles either!

Mikey, do you listen to any music to get pumped up for a show?
MW: [MCR guitarist] Frank [Iero] usually has some awesome mix going backstage. I also used to listen to a lot of Weezer before we went on.

TD: How good is "The Blue Album"?

MW: I love Pinkerton. I went to that Pinkerton album show, where Weezer played the whole thing -- it was amazing! They did "The Blue Album" the night before but unfortunately I couldn't make it.

TD: "The Blue Album" is so good, dude. That "going surfing" song ["Surf Wax America"] is the most badass thing ever.

Did you guys have to relearn any songs for this tour? Or are they ingrained in your brain by now…?
TD: No, I've been playing some of these songs for 20 years now.

MW: There are a couple songs that we're going to break out later in the tour that we had to relearn. To start out we're going to play a set similar to what we've been playing at the European festivals. But when we get further in we're going to change up the set list and there are some [songs] that we haven't played in probably five or six years. We'll probably break those out in September.

TD: The band is having me do a few solos, too. Vocals solos, though, not guitar solos. So we've got to work out where we want them [laughs].

MW: Yeah. We've got to figure that out.

Have you guys followed each other's careers over the years?
TD: I tell everyone that I groveled at their feet, "Come on tour with us!" I wanted them to tour with us on Blink's first reunion tour; it didn't work because they were coming off a tour cycle and we were just getting the band back together. But I'll say -- right here in front of him [Mikey] -- that I think My Chemical Romance are the next generation after Blink. The scope of their artistic acumen is radical and progressive. I'm a very progressive thinker about music, so I think this [tour and partnership] made a lot of sense. My Chem is already circling in the air right above us.

MW: That's awesome. Thanks for saying that. Blink is one of the bands we've looked up to and always respected. There are a lot of similarities in how we came up. We both came out of scenes that we didn't really fit in, but we all came into our own and did our own thing.

TD: What's cool about that statement is that the punk rock bands that didn't fit in were the great ones, usually, like the Clash or the Police or U2, who were actually good at playing their instruments. The Cure started with "Boys Don't Cry" and the next thing you know they're writing "Just Like Heaven." I see that in My Chemical Romance and I see that in us [Blink]. I've always thought that the punk bands that don't fit in are the ones that have the most potential.

MW: Absolutely. People will say what they're going to say, but you can't really pigeonhole either of us into a genre. We're just rock'n'roll, which makes it cool that we finally get to do this tour together.

So, Mikey, you were a Blink fan growing up?
MW: Absolutely. The first record I got was [1994's] Cheshire Cat. I think I was in the ninth grade.

TD: That's crazy!

Which explains the age range at this show. It's vast!
MW: I love that. Absolutely. With this tour there are going to be twenty-four-year-old kids, 40 year olds, 60 year olds. There's such a wide spectrum.

TD: And once Rancid joins the tour both of our bands will probably just sit down and take those nights off to just let Rancid play [laughs].

Excited for Rancid to join the tour, huh?
TD: Oh my god, I can't wait. I always get angry when I talk about Rancid because in my mind that band could have picked up exactly where the Clash left off. They are so pro and have so many hits, too. I still listen to Rancid every night before I play, in addition to all the other stuff I mentioned earlier.

Both new Blink songs released so far, "Up All Night" and "Heart's All Gone," display different sides of the band's sound. Tom, how would you describe the new album as a whole?
TD: It sounds like we took all of our independent projects (DeLonge's Angles & Airwaves, drummer Travis Barker's Transplants and solo LP, and bassist Mark Hoppus' +44) put them in a big bottle and shook it up. We've all learned a lot in our respective careers during that eight-year hiatus and it wouldn't be genuine or sincere to not bring it in. So I think you hear all of it. If you look at the two songs we've released, everything fits between those two compositions.

Are fans open-minded to your bands taking creative risks?
TD: I think [MCR] have built a career on that. With our last record [2003's Blink-182] we started stepping in that direction, but our fans are pretty hardcore. Having done Angels & Airwaves [during Blink's hiatus] I started realizing from a peripheral view what Blink really is. I learned what Blink was after it went away. When we came back I was like, "Okay that's what it is." It's helped me understand why fans are so fucking fatal about this. But I get it because I'm the same way about a lot of other punk rock bands. I'm like, "Don't fuck up what this meant to me as a teenager!"

MW: When you change [the band's sound] sometimes fans are stubborn and are like, "Oh man, this sounds different." But usually they grow to like the change, even if it's not be an immediate thing.

TD: Yeah… it takes a bit.

MW: It does. But then they go, "Oh, this is even better!"
